This drop-leaf, gatefold birch, dining table was designed by the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto and retailed by Finsven in the late 1940s. This early model has two drop-leaves that can extend the table 60 inches wide for a dinner party, with one leaf down for everyday or fold away to a console with both leaves down. The versatility along with its minimal space requirements make it perfect for apartments and small spaces everywhere.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is a world famous architect and designer. His furniture designs and technical innovations on bent plywood furniture, such as his patented L-legs featured in this table, had a tremendous impact on modernist furniture. Some of Aalto's most iconic designs have sold for record prices at auction and can be found in numerous private collections and famous museums.
This table is refinished but there is a strip of raised veneer along one side of the top as shown.
